Extension to listed building, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire The Grade 2 listed house was designed by the Architect M Clarke Edwards in the early 1900s, and is part of a street of houses by the same architect In view of the particularly sensitive nature of the site, we engaged in extensive detailed pre-application consultations with the Conservation Officer from the Local Authority and drew up a scheme which pleased both the client and the conservation officer. The scheme consists of a new single storey garden room which properly connects the house to its garden where there was little physical or visual connection previously. The garden room is designed to project the internal space into the garden so that the garden wraps itself around the new structure on not only three sides, but partially on the fourth side too. There are large glazed openings on three sides which can be opened up and which blur the definition of inside / outside space. High performance glass has been specified throughout, together with over-specification of insulating materials. |
