New extension, Oxfordshire

The house is part of a large Edwardian private club-house which was converted and divided into three houses in the 1960s. It is the central portion of the original building and incorporates the original grand entrance foyer and the formal staircase.

However, as a direct contrast to this, the kitchen was converted from the original men's toilet and was not of a size which was appropriate to the proportions of the rest of the house. It was also of an awkward shape and there was not enough space for dining in.

An additional problem was that the large and very attractive garden was offset from the house and was only viewed through two small windows in the original kitchen.

Purple Architect's brief was simply to extend the kitchen. However, in doing so, we looked carefully at the relationship between the garden and house, and used the extension of the kitchen to sensitively re-introduce and integrate the house with its garden.

The extension, although of modest size, has, with careful design, transformed our clients' lives - they now no longer spend as little time as possible in the kitchen, but now live mostly in the kitchen space, with its brightly day-lit interior and good views over the garden.
