New sports pavilion and landscaping near Thame

Other projects

New sports pavilion and landscaping, near Thame, Buckinghamshire

The Buckinghamshire village of Ashendon had a very dilapidated and basic changing room facility which served one football pitch.

Our brief was to provide a new replacement sports pavilion which would cater primarily for the village cricket and football teams, and would provide social facilities which could be used by the sporting clubs, and for village and private functions. Therefore the pavilion design had to serve a variety of end-users ranging from sporting events to children’s parties. Rental income from the social facilities will support the running costs of the pavilion in the future.

The brief included a new landscaped parking area, which, because of the sensitive location of the site on top of a hill within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), had to be as inconspicuous as possible.

We worked closely with Sport England, South East Rural Communities Council (SERCC) and the Football Foundation to comply with their briefs for areas and space relationships, and requirements for funding.

The building has a highly insulated timber framed structure with timber cladding, on a masonry plinth which, due to the slope on the site, elevates the pavilion to the level of the football pitch. There is a low under-croft which provides valuable storage space for football/cricket nets.

The car park surface is in a grass-planted geo-mesh system, with indigenous tree species planted on the boundary and within the car park. A new path in resin-bound gravel connects the car park with the pavilion and follows the contours of the site.

Purple Architects has obtained planning permission, Building Regulations approval and tenders from four local contractors based on construction drawings and NBS specifications, to be used with a JCT IFC 98 contract.
